Lesson 16 Where? Prepositions 5

Today we are going to see about some more prepositions of places in Tamil.

 

For – …-kkaaga
Among – ..kku mathiyile
Through – …-in vazhiyaai
Next – …aduthadhu

 

For – ..kkaaga/..kku

 

This preposition is used to indicate the use of something:

 

En amma-kku pirandha naal. It’s my mom’s birthday.En pirandha naal-kku en amma enakkaaga cake seivaanga. My mom makes cake for me on my birthday.Naan en amma-kaaga cake seiren. I am making a cake for my mom.Cake-kku vendiya ella porullum inge irukku. All things needed for the cake is here.

 

 

En amma-kaaga naan idha cake-a senjen. I made this cake for my mom.En amma-kaaga senje cake eppadi irukku? How is the cake that I made for my mother?En amma-kku idhu pidikkuma? Will my mom like it?

 

Roshan paritchai-kaaga padikiraan. Roshan is learning for his exams.Avan eppavum exam-kaaga nalla padippaan. He always studies well for his exams.Paritchai-le mudhal madhipen edupadhukaaga padikiraan. He is learning well for getting the first/highest mark.Paritchai-le mudhal madhipen eduthaa avanukaaga oru parisu kaathirukku. He has a gift awaiting his first marks.

Among – Mathiyil

Among is a preposition is used in the meaning in the midst of, surrounded by, in the company of, or in association with.

For example:

 

Naan oru kutty pen. En peru Rosy. I am a little girl. My name Rosy.Idhu en vaguppu arai. Ellorum en nanbargal. This is my class room. All are my friends.Naan ivanga mathiyile irruken. I am sitting among them.Ennai kandupidi. Find me.

 

Indha meen thotti-la paar. Look in this fish bowl.Idhu-la niraya meengal irukku. There are many fish in the bowl.Andha meengal mathiyile oru naththai irukku. There is a snail, among the fish.Meengalukku mathiyile irukkira naththai unakku theriyidha? Do you see the snail that is among the fish.

 

Translate the following sentences:

 

 

This is Rosie’s basket. Her fruit basket is beautiful.

She likes to eat fruits.

There are many fruits in her basket.

There are mangoes, bananas, apples, lemons, oranges.

There is a pineapple also in the basket.

Her favorite fruit is among the other fruits.

It is purple in colour. Do you know its name?

 

Among – Mathiyil

Among is a preposition is used in the meaning in the midst of, surrounded by, in the company of, or in association with.

For example:

 

Naan Shawn. Naan padathukku ticket vanga varisaila nikiren. I am Shawn. I am standing in a queue to buy movie tickets.Enakku munnaadi Grace irrukaa. Grace is standing before me.Enakku aduthu Rachel irrukaa. Next to me is Rachel.Avalukku aduthadhu Veera nikkiraan. Veera is standing next to her.

 

Idhu engal theru. Mudhal Veedu enga veedu. This is our street. The first house is ours.Adhuthu irupadhu Nancy veedu. Aval Japan poyitaa. Next is Nancy’s house. She left to Japan.Adhukku aduthadhu irrupadhu en thathaa veedu. Next to that is my grandpa’s house.Adhukku aduthu irrupadhu Charles uncle veedu. And next to that is my Uncle Charles’ house.

Adhukku aduthu en best friend Prem-udaiya veedu. And next to that is my best friend Prem’s house.

Through – Vazhiyaai

Now let us see how to say ‘through’ in Tamil. We say ‘vazhiyaa’ , when we have to say through.

Example:

 

Idhu oru rail vandi/ thodar-vandi. This is a train.Adhu oru suranga-paadhai vazhiyaa varudhu. It is coming through a tunnel.Andha vandi indha surranga-paadhai vazhiyaai vera oorukku poguthu. It is going to another place through this tunnel.Adhu eppadi nellindhu vallaindhu podhu paar. Look how it goes, twisting and turning.

 

Naan oru kutty pen. En peru Rosy. I am a little girl. My name RosyNaan train-la pogum bodhu jannal pakkathle ukaaruven. I sit near the window, when I go on a train.Jannal vazhiyaa iyarkai azhagai paarpen. I view the beauty of nature through the window.Jannal vazhiyaa veliya irukira ellorukkum kai asaippen. I wave my hand to the people outside.

 

Idhu Simba. Adhu oru singham. This is Simba. It is a lion.Adhu oru circus troupe-la irruku. It is in a circus troupe.Adhu ippo ring vazhiyaa kudhikka podu. It is going to jump through the ring now.Adhu ring vazhiya kudhichaa naama kaai thattalaama? If it jumps through the ring, shall we clap our hands?

 

Idhu Red Ridinghood. Iva Paati veetukku poraa. This is Red Ridinghood. She is going to her grandma’s house.Iva oru kaadu vazhiyaa paati veetukku poraa. She is going through a forest.Iva paatikku saapadu yedhuthittu kaadu vazhiyaa poraa. She is taking food for her grandma through the forest.
