Do & Don’t do…

Let us see how to say the don’t do or the do not do statements.
When we want to ask some one not to do something, in English we use the word ‘DON’T’ in the sentences. The same way in Tamil we use a suffix ‘-aadhe in the conversational form. For eg:

1. Paal kudi. (Drink milk.)
Coffee kudikkaadhe. (Don’t drink coffee.)

2. Kaaigal saapidu. (Eat vegetables.)
Junk food saapidaathe. (Don’t eat junk food.)

These verbs when they are used in the don’t statements, they have different combinations with the suffix –aadhe. In Tamil , mostly all the verbs will end with the vowel sounds such as a, e, i, and u.

Verbs ending with ‘a’

will usually have –ra

Example

Vaa (come) Va-ra En kooda va-raadhe
Thaa (give) Tha-ra Avanukku parisu tha-raadhe

Verbs ending with ‘u’

will usually have –a

Example

Vettu (cut) Vett-a Pazham vet-aadhe
Paadu (sing) Paad-a Paapa paad-aadhe
Aadu (dance) Aad-a
Ottu (paste) Ott-a
Otu (drive) Ot-a
Podu (drop) Pod-a
Moodu (close) Mood-a
Thallu (push/ nudge) Thall-a

Verbs ending with
‘u’

will usually have –kka

Example

Padu (lie down) Padu-kka Nee padu-kkaadhe
Kudu (give) Kudu-kka Aval book kudu-kkaadhe
Edu (take) Edu-kka
Kelu (Ask/ Listen) Ke-kka

Verbs ending with ‘i’ or ‘ai’

will usually have –kka

Example

Kadi (bite) Kadi-kka Negatha kadi-kkaadhe
Idi (pound) Idi-kka Arisi-a idi-kkaadhe
Madi (fold) Madi-kka
Udai (Break) Udai-kka
Thodai (wipe) Thodai-kka
Udhai (kick) Udhai-kka

There are some irregular verb formations too, which would become easy after a period of regular usage.
