Lesson 27 We & Us (Subject Pronoun & the Object Pronoun)

Today we are going to see about the difference between the Subject Pronoun and the Object Pronoun , in the first person plural sentences.

Subject Pronoun Object Pronoun
NAAM/ NAAMA (We – with the listener) Nammai (Her), and in some cases …namalukku or Namakku, nam-idam/kitta, namma kooda.

 

1. Using ‘NAMMAI’ for ‘US’ the object pronoun:

Hello Rajeev, sollunga. Hello Rajeev, tell me.
Kavitha, inaikku naama veliya porom. Kavitha, today we are going out.
Appadiya? Enge? Is it? Where?
Sundar nammai/ namma-lai avar veetukku azhaichi irukaar. Sundar has invited us to his house.
Avar nammai edukku azhaizhi irukaar? Enna vishesham? Why has he invited us? What is the occasion?
Avaroda magan pirandha naalukaaga nammai azhachi irukaar. He has invited us for his son’s birthday.

 

Amma, ennoda friend George, nammalai avan veetukku vara sonnaan. Mom, my friend John asked us to come to his place.
Edhukku? For what?/ Why?
Namma ange poi konjam neram video games vilayaada thaan. Just to go there and play video games for some time.
Nammalai avan koopitaana? Unmaiyava? Did he call us? Really?
Nammailai avanoda amma koopitaal pogalaam. Ippo nee poi padi. Let us go if his mother calls. Now you go and learn.


 
 


Ms. Daisy, nammai oru quiz poti-kku therndheduthu irukaanga. Ms. Daisy has selected us for a quiz competition.
Naama adhukku nalla padikkanum. We have to learn well for that.
Quiz-la nammalai kelvi ketaal sariya badhil sollanum. We have to answer correctly, if they question us.
Inainkku adhukku Ms. Daisy namakku payirchi thara poraanga.. Today, Ms. Daisy is going to train us for that.

 

2. Using ‘Namakku for ‘Us’ the object pronoun:

‘NAMMAI’ is the object pronoun, ‘Us’, but in some cases,‘NAMAKKU’, or ‘NAMMALUKKU’ is used as the object pronoun. Example:

Namakku kudutha project-a nallaa seiyanum. We have to do the project given to us.
Aamaa. Namakku appo sambalam uyarvu seivaanga. Yes. Then they will give us a hike in the salary.
Avanga namakku parisu kooda kudupaanga. They will also give us an award.
Adhellam vendaam. Avanga namakku sariya sambhalam kuduthaal nalla irukkum. No need of all those. It will be good, if they give us our salary properly.

 

Roshini : Namakku inter college competitions varudhu. Our inter-college competitions are arriving.
Vivek : Namakku enna thalaippu kuduthaanga? What was the topic they gave us?
Charu : Namakku kuduththa topic-la oru paatu paadanum. We have to sing a song on that topic.
Vivek : Namakku kuduththa topic-a sollunga. Naan paatu ezhuduren. Tell me the topic, they gave us. I will write a song.

 

 

Enna pasangala, ungalukku sandhoshamaa? Hey kids, are you happy?
Aamaam, Appa. Yes, Dad.
Appa, neenga namakku indha table-a eppo book panneenga. Dad, when did you book this table for us?
Namakkaaga idha neththu book pannen. I booked it, for us, yesterday.
Namakku, indha restaurant-la saapida oru discount coupon kidachidhu. We won a discount coupon to dine in this restaurant.
Namakku, indha discount coupon kidachidhu, engalukku romba sandhosham. We are happy, that we got this discount coupon.

 

3. Using ‘Namma-kitta’ for Us, the object pronoun:

‘Nammai’ is the object pronoun, ‘Us’, but in some cases like the following, the ‘Namma-kitta’ is used as the object pronoun. Example:


Namma veetu pinnaadi niraya kuppai irukku. There is a lot of trash in our backyard.
Vaa, namma-kitta indha periya pai irukku. Come, we have this big bag.
Namma-kitta irukkira thevai-illadha porul ellam idhula podalaam. Let us have throw all the trash we have, into this bag.
Sari. Namma-kitta irukkum ella kuppai-yum idhula podalaam. Yes. Let’s put all the garbage into this bag.

 

Amma, cupcakes thaiyaar! Mom! The cupcakes are ready.
Namma-kitta ethanai cupcakes irukku? How many cookies do we have?
Namma-kitta 25 cup cakes irukku. We have 25 cup cakes with us.
Illa. Namma-kitta 28 cupcakes irukku. No. We’ve got 28 cupcakes.

 


Manaivi/ Wife : Hello Raj, naan oru sale-kku vandhu-irukken. Hello Raj, I have come for a sale.
Kanavar/ Husband : Namma-kitta kaasu illa. Ippo edhuvum vaangaathe. We don’t have money. Don’t buy anything, now.
Manaivi/ Wife: Ungalukku kavalai vendaam. Naan ellam vaangitten. You don’t worry. I have bought everything.
Kanavar/ Husband : Eppadi? Namma kitta panam illaiye. How? We don’t have any money.
Manaivi/ Wife: Namma-kitta panam illa. Aana namma-kitta credit card irukku. Yes. We don’t have money. But we have a credit card.

Kanavar/ Husband : Credit card-a! Credit card?
Manaivi/ Wife: Aamaa. Unga credit card en-kitta thaan irukku. Adhule thaan vanginen. Yes. I’ve got your credit card. I bought everything with this credit card.

 

4. Using ‘Namma-kooda/ Nammaloda ’ for Him:

‘Nammai’ is the object pronoun, ‘Us’, but in some cases like the following, the ‘Namma-kooda or Nammaloda’ is used as the object pronoun. Example:


Naama college picnic-kku enge porom? Where are we going for the college trip?
Theriyaadhu. Aana namma-kooda Mrs. Martin varaanga. I don’t know. But Mrs. Martin is coming with us.
Enna? Namma-kooda Mrs. Martin-a? What? Mrs. Marin? With us?
Namma-kooda avanga vandhaa, naama sandhoshamaa irukave mudiyaadhu. We cannot be happy on the trip, if she comes with us.

 

Princy : Hey John nammaloda serndhu paatu potti-kku paada poraanaam. Hey, It seems that John is going to sing with us in the competition.
Tracy : Enna? Namma-kooda ivan paadunaa, naama jeyipomaa? Will we win, if he sings with us?
John : Naan sariyaa paaduven. Please..Unga kooda naanum paadalaama? I will sing well.Please, shall I sing with you?

 


Kevin: Amma, Appa! Namma-kooda Dany uncle kudumbamum India varaangalaam. Mom, Dad. It seems that Uncle Dan and his family is coming along with us to India.
Amma : Namma-kooda varaangala? Yaar appadi sonnaanga? Coming with us? Who said that?
Appa : Naan thaan Dany-a namma-kooda vara sonnen. It was I, who called Dany, to come along with us.
Kevin: Enakku romba jolly. Namma-kooda avaroda magan Dave varuvaan. I am excited. His son Dave will be coming with us.
Amma : Aamaa. Namma-kooda Vinie aunty-um vandhaal nalla irukkum. Yes. It will be great, if Vinie Aunt is also coming with us.
