Lesson 52 Get/ Got (Verb )

Get is an irregular verb. Its three parts are get, got, gotten…in English.

Get is a very common verb, especially in informal speaking and writing. Get has many different meanings and is used in many idioms. We use it less often in formal writing. Get has many different grammatical patterns depending on the meaning.

Now we are going to see how to frame sentences in tamil, where the word, GET is used.

 

How to say sentences that have ‘Get’:

We commonly use ‘get’ when we mean, very generally, ‘buy’, ‘fetch’, ‘receive’ or ‘obtain’.

Examples:

 


Eppo neenga ungaloda pudhu car-a vaanga poreenga? When are you going to get your new car?
Radhika, Raj-kaaga oru anbalippu vaanga inge irukkaanga. Radhika is here to get a birthday gift for Raj.
Pona varusham, ava avanukku oru kai-gadigaaram vaangi kudhuththaa. She got him a watch last year.
Indha varusham, ava avanukku oru sattai vaangithara poraa. This year, she is going to get him a shirt.

 

Reena eppavum romba kadinamaa uzhaippa. Reena always work hard.
Indha varusham, ava nalla madhippengal eduththu irukkiraa. She got good grades this year.
Indha varushath-oda sirandha maanavi-kaana parisu. She got this year’s best student award.
Avaloda kadinaa uzhaippaala thaan, indha parisu kidachidhu. She has got this award because of her hardwork.

 


Sam, avanoda amma-kaaga thannee konduvara poraan. Sam is going to get water for his mom.
Avanoda veetukku pinnaadi irukkira kinaru-le irundhu thannee kondu vara poraan. He is going water from the well in his backyard.
Andha vaali-la thannee kondu-vara poraan. He is going to get water in that bucket.

 

Translate the following sentences:

How to say a sentence when ‘get’ means’ become’

We commonly use get to mean ‘become’ or to describe a change of state or situation. Let us see how to say such sentences in tamil.

Examples:

 


Kavalai padaathe. Unakku seekiramaa kunamaayidum. Don’t worry. You will become better soon.
Viji-kku udambu sariyilla. Viji is not well.
Ava mazhai-le nanaijadhaale, avalukku udambu sariyillaamal pochu. She fell sick because she got wet in the rain.
Ava seekirathle gunamaayiduvannu naan namburen. I hope she gets well soon.

 

Veliye iruttaa aagudhu. Romba kuluraavum irukku. It is getting dark. It is cold outside.
Naan, unakku oru pudhu jacket vangittu vandhirukken. I have got you a new jacket.
Ippo, Unnoda jacketai-um glovesai-um pottuko. Now, put on your jacket and gloves.
Illavittaa, unakku kulurum. Otherwise you are going to get cold.


 


Vaara kadaisiyile parka-la vilayaada, Arjunkku konjam neram kidaikkum. Arjun gets sometime to play in the park, at the weekends.
Indha vaaram mazhaiyaa irundhuchu. Adhanaale park romba sagadhiyaa irukku. This week was rainy and so the park is muddy.
Paavam kuzhandhai. Avan vazhukki vizhundhu, muzhusaa azhukka aayitaan. Poor kid! Arjun slipped and got dirty all over.

How to say a sentence when ‘get’ when we describe negative events:

We can use get to describe things that happen to us, often things which are unfortunate and which we don’t want to happen.

Now let us see how we say such a sentence in Tamil.

Vibathu-la avanoda car sedhamaagiduchu. His car got damaged in the accident.
Neththu oru bayagaramaana puyal adiththadhu. There was a bad storm yesterday night.
Niraya veedugal sedham aayiduchu. Many houses got damaged.
Adhe neram, niraya kadaigal thiruttu nadandhuchu. At the sametime, many shops got looted.

 

Mr. Regan-oda vimaanam oru mani neram thaamadham aayiduchu. Mr. Regan’s flight got delayed by an hour.
Avarukku oru mukiyamaana meeting-kku thaamadhamaayiduchu. And he got late to very important meeting.
Idhanaale avaukku padavi uyarvu kidaikkale. And because of he did not get his promotion.


 


Indha car-a oru truck idichiduchu. This car got hit by a truck.
Andha car-kku sondhakaarar, pona vaaram thaan adhai kaapeedu senjaar. The owner got it insured last week.
Avar idha ippo inge seri senjikiraar.. Now, he is getting it fixed here.

How to say a sentence when ‘get’ means ‘cause something to happen’:

We can use get to say that we cause something to happen or to be done. It is a less formal way of saying have something done.

Now let us see how we say such a sentence in Tamil.

James avaroda pazhaiyaa computer-a oru technician kondu sari senjitaar. James got his old computer fixed by a technician.
Sila nimishathle-ye avar adha sari senjitaar. He got it fixed in few minutes.
Avar unmaiyaave oru nalla technician thaan. He is indeed, a good technician.

 

Raghav, naan ungaloda jacket-a drycleaners-kitta irundhu suththam senju vaangiten. Raghav, I have got your jacket cleaned from the drycleaners.
Ippo naan konjam kuzhambu seiyanum. Now I got to cook some good Indian curry.
Namma nanbargalukkaaga thaan naan adhai thayyaar seiren. I am getting it ready for our friends.
