Adjective(பெயரடை)

A word that qualifies the noun or pronoun is called Adjective ( பெயரடை ).

There are five kinds of adjectives.

Qualitative ( பண்புப் பெயரடை )

A word that describes the quality of an object or person is called Qualitative.

Sentence	Qualitative word
This is a new toy/இது புது பொம்மை	New / புது
Ram is a bad boy/ராம் கெட்ட பையன்	Bad / கெட்ட
This is a beautiful flower/இது அழகான பூ	Beautiful/அழகான

Numeral ( எண் பெயரடை )

The word that shows the nouns or pronouns in numbers is called Numeral adjective.

Sentence	Numeral word
There are five toes in the leg/காலில் ஐந்து விரல்கள் உள்ளன	Five/ஐந்து
One person came to my house/ஒருவர் என் வீட்டிற்க்கு வந்தார்	One / ஒருவர்
Fill in the two pots/இரண்டு குடங்களை நிறப்புக	Two/இரண்டு

Quantitaive ( அளவுப் பெயரடை )

The word that describes the quantity of an object or person is called Quantitative adjective.

Sentence	Quantitative word
I ate some bananas/நான் சில வாழைப் பழங்களை சாப்பிடேன்	Some/சில
Very few people went temple/வெகு சிலரே கோயிலுக்கு சென்றனர்	Very few/வெகு சில
The whole pot was broken/முழுப் பானை உடைந்து போனது.	Whole/முழு

Demonstrative ( சுட்டுப் பெயரடை )

The word that points to which object or person is called Demonstrative adjective.

Sentence	Demonstrative word
Those children ate their food/அந்த குழந்தைகள் சாப்பாடு சாப்பிட்டார்கள்	Those/அந்த
This toy is mine/இந்த பொம்மை என்னுடையது	This/இந்த
That house is nice/அந்த வீடு அழகாக இருக்கிறது	That/அந்த

Colour ( வண்ணப் பெயரடை )

The word that describes the colour of an object or person is called Colour adjective.

Sentence	Colour words
The white cat is sitting/வெள்ளைப் பூணை உக்கார்ந்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது	White/வெள்ளை
The apple is red in colour/ஆப்பில் சிவப்பு நிறத்தில் உள்ளது	Red/சிவப்பு
I painted the house in blue /நான் வீட்டை நீல நிறத்தில் வண்ணம் அடித்தேன்	Blue/நீலம்

Comparison of Adjectives

The comparison of adjective is done adding the phrases like எல்லோரையும் விட,ஐ விட,எல்லோவற்றையும் விட.The comparison of adjective is classified into positive,comparative and superlative.

POSITIVE	COMPARATIVE	SUPERLATIVE
Radha is beautiful/ராதா அழகாக இருக்கிறாள்	Radha is more beautiful than Uma/ராதா உமாவை விட அழகாக இருக்கிறாள்	Anu is the most beautiful of all/அனு எல்லோரையும் விட அழகாக இருக்கிறாள்
Ravi is great/ரவி சிறந்தவர்	Ravi is greater than Ram/ரவி ராமை விட சிறந்தவர்	Ravi is the greatest of all/ரவி அனைவரையும் விட சிறந்தவர்
Radha is brave/ராதா வீரமானவள்	Ram is braver than Radha/ராதாவை விட ராம் வீரமானவன்	Ram is the bravest of all/ராம் அனைவரையும் விட வீரமானவன்

Formation of Adjectives

Adding special suffixes with nouns.

SUFFIX	EXAMPLE
ஆன	வீரம் – வீரமான
உள்ள	சுவை – சுவை உள்ள
த்தனமான	முட்டாள் – முட்டாள்தனமான
சார்ந்த	அழகு சார்ந்த
நிறைந்த	அன்பு நிறைந்த
உடன் கூடிய	நட்புடன் கூடிய
