Annan: Thambi eppadidaa irukka? Veetla ellaarum eppadi irukkaanga?
Elder brother: How are you (little) brother? How’s everyone at home?
அண்ணன்: தம்பி எப்படிடா இருக்க? வீட்ல எல்லாரும் எப்படி இருக்காங்க?

Thambi: Nallaa irukkoam annaa. Neenga eppadi irukkeenga?
Younger brother: We are fine (big) brother. How are you?
தம்பி: நல்லா இருக்கோம் அண்ணா. நீங்க எப்படி இருக்கீங்க?

Annan: Naangalum nallaa irukkoam. Naeththu-la irundhu unakku try (muyarchchi) pannuraen. Aanaa innaikku dhaan unna contact (thodarbu) panna mudinjadhu. Yaendaa mobile (kaipaesi) sariyillaiyaa?
Elder brother: We are fine. I’ve been trying since yesterday, but only today I’m able to contact (reach) you. Why? Isn’t your mobile working?
அண்ணன்: நாங்களும் நல்லா இருக்கோம். நேத்துல இருந்து உனக்கு ட்ரை (முயற்சி) பண்ணுறேன். ஆனா இன்னைக்கு தான் உன்ன காண்டாக்ட் (தொடர்பு) பண்ண முடிஞ்சது. ஏண்டா மொபைல் (கைபேசி) சரியில்லையா?

Thambi: Illannaa. Inga romba mazhai penju current (minsaaram) illaadhanaala mobile-a charge (minnoottam) panna mudiyala.
Younger brother: No (brother). Because of heavy rains, since there was no power, I was unable to charge the mobile.
தம்பி: இல்லன்னா. இங்க ரொம்ப மழை பெஞ்சு கரண்ட் (மின்சாரம்) இல்லாதனால மொபைல்ல சார்ஜ் (மின்னூட்டம்) பண்ண முடியல.

Annan: Appadiyaa! Ingeyum mazhai dhaan. Aanaa periya mazhaiyaa peyyala. Current-um pogala.
Elder brother: Oh! Well, it’s raining here too, but not heavily. No power cuts either.
அண்ணன்: அப்படியா! இங்கேயும் மழை தான். ஆனா பெரிய மழையா பெய்யல. கரெண்ட்டும் போகல.

Thambi: Sarinnaa, sollunga enna vishayam?
Younger brother: OK (brother). Tell me, what’s up?
தம்பி: சரின்னா, சொல்லுங்க என்ன விஷயம்?

Annan: Oorla ganamazhai-nnu TV news-la (tholaikaatchi seydhi) paaththaen. Adhai paththi visaarikka dhaan naeththey phone pannunaen. Innum mazhai peyyudhaa?
Elder brother: I saw the news on TV that there are heavy rains in our hometown. I called yesterday itself to enquire about it. Is it still raining?
அண்ணன்: ஊர்ல கனமழைன்னு டி‌வி நியூஸ்ல (தொலைகாட்சி செய்தி) பாத்தேன். அதை பத்தி விசாரிக்க தான் நேத்தே போன் பண்ணுனேன். இன்னும் மழை பெய்யுதா?

Thambi: Ippo mazhai illa. Mazhai thannee veetta suththi thaengi nikkudhu. Veliya engaeyum poga mudiyala.
Younger brother: Not at the moment. But rain water is stagnant all around the house; we’re unable to go out anywhere.
தம்பி: இப்போ மழை இல்ல. மழை தண்ணீ வீட்ட சுத்தி தேங்கி நிக்குது. வெளிய எங்கேயும் போக முடியல.

Annan: Indha naeraththula dhaan neenga gavanamaa irukkanum. Thaengi irukkura thannee-la kosu neraiya irukkum – Dengue, Malaria maadhiri kaachchal ellaam varum.
Elder brother: You need to be careful specifically at this time. There are lots of mosquitoes in stagnant water – they can cause illnesses like Dengue fever and Malaria.
அண்ணன்: இந்த நேரத்துல தான் நீங்க கவனமா இருக்கணும். தேங்கி இருக்குற தண்ணீல கொசு நெறைய இருக்கும். டெங்கு, மலேரியா மாதிரி காச்சல் எல்லாம் வரும்.

Thambi: Veettula ulla ellaa jannalukkum kosu valai adichchirukku. Adhanaala veettukkulla adhigamaa kosu varaadhu.
Younger brother: All the windows at home are affixed with mosquito nets. So mosquitoes hardly enter the house.
தம்பி: வீட்டுல உள்ள எல்லா ஜன்னலுக்கும் கொசு வலை அடிச்சிருக்கு. அதனால வீட்டுக்குள்ள அதிகமா கொசு வராது.

Annan: Kudikkira thanniyavum kodhikka vachchu, aara vachchu kudinga. Appadhaan jaladhosham, chali, kaachchal varaama paaththukkalaam.
Elder brother: Always drink boiled water. Only then can we protect ourselves from catching a cold, chest infection or fever.
அண்ணன்: குடிக்கிற தண்ணியவும் கொதிக்க வச்சு, ஆற வச்சு குடிங்க. அப்பதான் ஜலதோஷம், சளி, காச்சல் வராம பாத்துக்கலாம்.

Thambi: Sarinnaa.
Younger brother: Will do (brother).
தம்பி: சரின்னா.

Annan: Avasaraththukku thaevaiyaana maaththirai ellaam vachchirukkeengalaa?
Elder brother: Do you have all the necessary medicines for an emergency?
அண்ணன்: அவசரத்துக்கு தேவையான மாத்திரை எல்லாம் வச்சிருக்கீங்களா?

Thambi: Irukku. Mazhai kaalam aarambikkum bodhey appaa vaangeettu vandhuttaanga.
Younger brother: Yes we do. As soon as the monsoons began, dad got them.
தம்பி: இருக்கு. மழை காலம் ஆரம்பிக்கும் போதே அப்பா வாங்கீட்டு வந்துட்டாங்க.

Annan: Paal packet (pottalam) ellaam varudhaa?
Elder brother: Are milk packets getting delivered?
அண்ணன்: பால் பாக்கெட்(பொட்டலம்) எல்லாம் வருதா?

Thambi: Paal varala, aanaa veettula paal powder (podi) irukku. Adhai vachchu Coffee, Tea vaenumgura bodhu pottukkuroam.
Younger brother: No, they aren’t. We have milk powder at home. We use it to prepare coffee or tea, whenever necessary.
தம்பி: பால் வரல, ஆனா வீட்டுல பால் பவுடர் (பொடி) இருக்கு. அதை வச்சு காஃபி, டீ வேணும்குற போது போட்டுக்குறோம்.

Annan: Saappaattukku kaaykari ellaam vaangi vachchutteengalaa?
Elder brother: Have you bought vegetables for food?
அண்ணன்: சாப்பாட்டுக்கு காய்கறி எல்லாம் வாங்கி வச்சுட்டீங்களா?

Thambi: Ellaam vaangi vachchaachchu. Adhoda Bread-um, muttai-yum vaangiyaachchu.
Younger brother: We’ve bought everything. Along with it, we also got bread and eggs.
தம்பி: எல்லாம் வாங்கி வச்சாச்சு. அதோட பிரட்டும், முட்டையும் வாங்கியாச்சு.

Annan: Thaengi nikkira thannee vadiyudhaannu paaru. Illainnaa corporation-kku (nagaraatchi) phone panni sollunga. Avanga pump (kuzhaay) konduvandhu thanneeya vaththa vaippaanga alladhu vaera yaedhaavadhu nadavadikkai eduppaanga.
Elder brother: See if the stagnant water drains off; or else, call the corporation authorities and inform them. They will bring a pump and drain off the water or they may take some other action.
அண்ணன்: தேங்கி நிக்கிற தண்ணீ வடியுதான்னு பாரு. இல்லைன்னா கார்ப்பரேஷனுக்கு (நகராட்சி) போன் பண்ணி சொல்லுங்க. அவங்க பம்ப் (குழாய்) கொண்டுவந்து தண்ணிய வத்த வைப்பாங்க அல்லது வேற ஏதாவது நடவடிக்கை எடுப்பாங்க.

Thambi: Yaerkanavey corporation adhikaaringa vandhu paaththuttu poyirukkaanga. Avanga enna seyraangannu paappoam.
Younger brother: The corporation officials already came and saw it (assessed the situation). Let’s see what they’ll do.
தம்பி: ஏற்கனவே கார்ப்பரேஷன் அதிகாரிங்க வந்து பாத்துட்டு போயிருக்காங்க, அவங்க என்ன செய்றாங்கன்னு பாப்போம்.

Annan: Sari. Ammaa eppadi irukkaanga? Veettu vaelai-yila yaedhaavadhu help (udhavi) panni kudukkuriyaa?
Elder brother: Alright. How is mom? Do you help with any house-work?
அண்ணன்: சரி. அம்மா எப்படி இருக்காங்க? வீட்டு வேலையில ஏதாவது ஹெல்ப் (உதவி) பண்ணி குடுக்கிறியா?

Thambi: Ammaa yaedhaavadhu kaettaanganna senju kuduppaen.
Younger brother: If Mom asks for my help, I help her.
தம்பி: அம்மா ஏதாவது கேட்டாங்கன்னா செஞ்சு குடுப்பேன்.

Annan: Sari. Ammaa, appaava nallaa paaththukko. Neeyum gavanamaa iru. Naalai-kku phone pannuraen.
Elder brother: OK. Take good care of Mom and Dad. You also be careful. I’ll call tomorrow.
அண்ணன்: சரி. அம்மா அப்பாவ நல்லா பாத்துகோ. நீயும் கவனமா இரு. நாளைக்கு ஃபோன் பண்ணுறேன்.

Thambi: Neengalum gavanamaa irunga. Anni, pillaigalai-yum kaettadhaa sollunga.
Younger brother: You take care too. Pass my regards to Anni (sister in law) and your kids.
தம்பி: நீங்களும் கவனமா இருங்க. அண்ணி, பிள்ளைகளையும் கேட்டதா சொல்லுங்க.

Annan: OK. Bye.
Elder brother: Sure. Bye.
